Thundercat & WILLOW Float Toward True Love On New Song “ThunderWave”

Contemporary jazz-funk pioneer Thundercat is less than a month away from dropping his fifth studio effort, Distracted. To build anticipation, he has just unveiled the record's fifth single, “ThunderWave,” which features a guest appearance by WILLOW. Helmed by Greg Kurstin—who also shares songwriting credits with both performers—the track channels the polished, R&B-infused pop sounds typical of the early 1990s. That said, Thundercat injects his signature eccentric flair through intricate keyboard melodies, while Kurstin incorporates atmospheric water sound effects.

Lyrically, “ThunderWave” explores the concept of two partners finding comfort and refuge in one another amidst chaotic times. During the song’s opening pre-chorus, the pair harmonize about navigating the uncharted territory of their new relationship. At one point, Thundercat’s vocal delivery bears a striking resemblance to his former creative partner and yacht-rock icon Michael McDonald.
